Top Ten Concepts Shortlisted
Our review committee has shortlisted the top ten concept proposals received out of all 67 crowdsourced journalism concept proposals submitted from 13 countries across Africa. Using set guidelines the review committee - comprised of respected journalists, technologists and media professionals working in Africa - chose the following concepts below as the top ten; note this is a random list and does not represent any preference with regards to the shortlisted concepts.
List of Top Ten Crowdsourced Journalism Concepts
1. This Is My Back Yard (Kenya)
Submitted by: Anjali Nayar - Journalist /Filmmaker (Canadian)
Summary: The aim is to use crowdsourced journalism to gather and disseminate information on the subject of land and resources in Liberia.
2. Uganda Science Journalists Association – USJA (Uganda)
Submitted by: Isaac Musimenta - USJA Member
Summary: The project is about the media's engagement with stakeholders through crowd-sourced Journalism.
3. Blue God (South Africa)
Submitted by: Simone Scholtz - South Africa; Felix Masi - DRC; Davina Jogi - Zimbabwe.
Summary: Aims to use crowdsourced journalism tools and techniques to promote partnerships and share information.
4. Wanzo (Ivory Coast)
Submitted by: Selay Marius KOUASSI - BBC Correspondent in Abidjan
Summary: “Wanzo” which means ‘truth revealed’ in Ivorian urban slang, will be the very first crowdsourcing investigative journalism project launched by Ivorian journalists with a strong interest in investigation.
5. Catch the Teacher Late (Uganda)
Submitted by: Constantine Odongo - New Vision, Kampala
Summary: The Catch the teacher late project aims to use crowdsourced journalism to monitor service delivery.
6. Disaster Reporting (Kenya)
Submitted by: Robert Mureithi - Blogger and Facilitator
Summary: Will use crowdsourcing tools as aids to accurate reporting.
7. Tanzglo (Tanzania)
Submitted by: BYEKWASO COSMAS - Founder Tanzglo and Business Manager at Ebony Fm.
Summary: Uses crowdsourced journalism to give ordinary citizens control over news agendas.
8. CCDN (Zimbabwe)
Submitted by: EDDINGTON MUTAKIWA SHAYANOWAKO - Coordinator, Chitungwiza Community Development Network.
Summary: The goal is to use crowdsourced journalism to raise awareness on issues important to the target audience.
9. A l'Ecoute (CAR)
Submitted by: François-Xavier B. Ada Affana - University Student
Summary: Uses crowdsourced journalism to increase collaboration between journalists and their audiences.
10. Eseriani (Kenya)
Submitted by: IBRAHIM PARANAE KANTET - Chairman ESERIANI
Summary: To use crowdsourced journalism to increase collaboration and reduce tensions.
The Judging Process
Our panel of highly esteem judges including Ethan Zuckerman – Director of MIT’s Center of Civic Media; Jeff Howe - professor of journalism at Northeastern University and author of the book Crowdsourcing: Why the Power of the Crowd is Driving the Future of Business; Jun Matsushita - Head of Innovation and Technology at Internews Europe; and Matt O'reilly - Programme Manager at Indigo Trust; are currently reviewing the top ten concepts and will make a decision on which of these will emerge as the top three within the week.
Announcements on the winning concepts will be made on or before September 20th. An awards ceremony will be held at The Fairview Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya on 26th September to promote the winning crowdsourced journalism concept ideas.
